| Jill's next NEXT record |
[08 Apr 2010|03:03pm] |
Hello feller fans and friends, Wanna make a record with me? Want to see what it’s like in the studio? Wanna be a bad-ass and brag to your friends? Well…in Los Angeles on April 11th the amazing John Doe and I are each making recordings, w/ the same band, in the same day ! ! Not only would you create the good vibe–helping us get a great performance-but you would have a rare look behind the scenes, experiencing the recording process first hand, in the same room with us while we record. Does that sound good?
We have a killer band, including Don Was on bass and Doug Pettibone on guitar. We’re paying for the studio & musicians by inviting fans to the session.
This stuff ain’t cheap so please excuse the higher priced tickets. (It IS once in a lifetime though.) Here’s a link to find out more details and what you can expect.

Sure you do. There is still time to put up posters to promote Jill's shows -- at colleges, libraries, community boards, coffee shops, preschools... E-mail me at vincentblackwood@live.com. I will send you the poster for your area and some very helpful guidelines from Jill manager guy, Paul. Enjoy the show. If you've never met Jill you are in for a treat. She is very friendly and approachable -- and a really swell gal. 10/23/09 (Fri) Asheville NC 28801 Grey Eagle 10/25/09 (Sun) Nashville TN 37203 The Basement 10/26/09 (Mon) Memphis TN 38104 Hi-Tone Cafe 11/4/09 (Wed) Ann Arbor MI 48104 The Ark 11/5/09 (Thu) Cleveland OH 44110 Beachland Ballroom 11/6/09 (Fri) Buffalo NY The Ninth Ward 11/7/09 (Sat) PITTSBURGH PA 15213 CARNEGIE LECTURE HALL 11/8/09 (Sun) Chicago IL 60625 Old Town School Of Folk Music 11/9/09 (Mon) Madison WI High Noon Saloon 11/10/09 (Tue) Minneapolis MN 55455 Cedar Cultural Centre 11/12/09 (Thu) Seattle WA 98107 Tractor Tavern 11/14/09 (Sat) Los Angeles, CA The Mystery Train 11/20/09 (Fri) Santa Monica CA McCabe's Guitar Shop 11/22/09 (Sun) San Diego CA 92101 Casbah 11/27/09 (Fri) Denver CO 80205 Walnut Room 11/29/09 (Sun) Kansas City MO 64111 Record Bar 11/30/09 (Mon) St. Louis MO Off Broadway 12/4/09 (Fri) New York NY 10011 Highline Ballroom 12/5/09 (Sat) Philadelphia PA 19104 World Cafe Live 12/6/09 (Sun) Goshen MA 01032 The IMA Big Barn Tour dates are always subject to change. | The Rumpus Interview with Jill Sobule |
[30 Jul 2009|08:53pm] |
|
With the increased media attention on Jill, I was looking forward to mainstream articles about her. Unfortunately, the recent stories have been disappointing (at least to me): sloppy, lacking in any insight or asking the same five flat-footed questions. The Rumpus article by Stephen Elliott is everything an interview should be. It is bright, funny and compelling.

| New website "Song by Song by Jill" |
[24 May 2009|06:57pm] |
|
I am fascinated with the stories behind the songs. So, perhaps more for my own entertainment than others, I have started a website called "Song by Song by Jill." Or maybe it is a guide for wayward reviewers. (No, that is NOT what the song “San Francisco” is about.) I found the stories behind the songs in Jill's own words (from blogs, live recordings and interviews) along with videos and lyrics. I had such fun I couldn't stop and have added a "Brooklyn Years" section with the stories behind other fan favorites.
or for the "Brooklyn Years" off ramp.

Evie Nagy, N.Y. Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule took a uncharted path to her sixth studio album, "California Years." Instead of the usual record company routine, Sobule financed the recording, production and publicity for the set with donations solicited through jillsnextrecord.com, where she raised $75,000 between January and March 2008.
On Tuesday (April 14), Sobule celebrated the release of "California Years" on her own Pinko Records with an intimate performance at Joe's Pub in New York City.
Beginning alone with a guitar, Sobule opened the Joe's Pub set with new album track "Nothing to Prove," a song about growing older and wiser and at peace in the L.A. entertainment business, with lines like "everyone's in the industry, and I hate when they use that word, and when they tell me they're in the industry, I ask, ‘Oh, are you in steel?'"
Sobule was joined later in the set by New York jazz band Sex Mob, who accompanied the singer on first "California Years" single "Bobbie Gentry," as well as by violin-cello duo Ethel. The set included a number of songs from the new album as well as older favorites such as "Lucy At The Gym," about an anorexic gym addict, and doomsday love song "Good Life." Near the end of that song, she broke from a sustained note saying that her voice was going from a full schedule of interviews earlier in the day, including "a lot of top-40 radio, where all they wanted to ask me about was Katy Perry."
While declining to share any feelings about the younger pop star's success with the loaded song title, Sobule did use the encore to politely ask if she could "take the song back," closing the show with a triumphant full-band performance of her original version of "I Kissed A Girl," about two suburban teenagers finding unexpected romance

| Jewelry for Jill |
[01 Apr 2009|06:52pm] |
|
Hello everyone :) I've been instructed to advise you of a neat thing going on over at The Raven's Nest. It's a jewelry/beading blog and the proprietress (me) makes jewelry based on various themes and inspiration. This week I'm taking inspiration from Jill Sobule songs since her new album is due out soon. I'm asking folks to pick which song I should base my jewelry on and which beads I should use. I'll go by whatever gets the most votes, so please vote! Polls close Saturday. And the piece (or pieces) will be done by the 14th.

| You are nerdy and cool... |
[25 Mar 2009|01:37pm] |
There is now a transcript up of the CNN interview with Jill.
I had a nightmare that Jill actually did sell shares for her next record and Rupert Murdoch bought a controlling interest. What a fool, no one owns Jill.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/03/24/jill.sobule.album/ Here is a sample; CNN: Did you know a lot of the folks who donated?
Sobule: I don't have a Madonna-sized fan base, so I can actually e-mail and talk to everyone that e-mails me, because I am totally appreciative and I like my fans! They seem to have the same interests as me. They are kind of nerdy and cool -- and have good taste, obviously.

The Jill Show has another home...on the web at YouTube.com. JillSobuleDotCom's channel features performances by Jill and tonight's extra special guest stars (John Doe, Syd Straw, Don Was and so many others. I must say, they all seem to panel very well.)
Each video is an amazing unplugged version of a song from the "California Years". Witty, charming and so Jill. The joke is they are really parodies of instructional videos hiding wonderful performances inside. So don't think, "I don't want to learn to play guitar the Sobule way". You’ll miss the home edition of the Jill Show and fall into a deep depression. Sad. The best variety show in years and you didn't watch it.
The five videos so far are;
"League of Failures" (a stunning performance) "Where is Bobbie Gentry?" "A Good Life" "Empty Glass" "Sweetheart"
I think of "Sweetheart" as a love song for my BFF, Nicole. But that's the romantic in me. You can subscribe to the home page and also become one of Jill's friends. She has 15 subscribers but only has two friends. Huh?! No way! That's just wrong!!
Birdiezzz and I are not Jill's only friends! You want to be Jill's friend! Admit it! Go there and do it right now. There...you feel better already, don't you? Sure you do. Now you have the love and admiration of a really sweet woman. And Jill will be happy too. Nice.
